2020 Gold Pan Finalist: Distinguished Community Service – Large Business

Gold Pan Finalist

In 2019, Mountain View Elementary approached Terry Howard and asked if Carlile would sponsor a student attendance program.

Their goal is to improve attendance, and they needed help to encourage this achievement.  Every student who achieves perfect attendance is entered into a monthly drawing.

The parent of the student who wins the monthly drawing wins a $100 gift card to Walmart (Carlile donated gift cards).  At the end of the year, another drawing is held for 2 bikes awarded to 2 students. This is just one example of Carlile’s dedication to the community and one reason why they are being recognized as a 2020 Gold Pan Finalist.

As Carlile celebrates its 40th anniversary, community service remains a guiding principle for the company. Carlile has a longstanding history of helping a variety of community organizations and events through employee volunteerism, in-kind transportation services, and donations. This level of community service is what it takes to be considered a 2020 Gold Pan Finalist for large businesses.

Below are additional community services and events that highlight Carlile’s 2020 Gold Pan Finalist recognition.

  • Recently, Carlile delivered PPE to frontline workers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, using available transportation capacity to meet urgent needs during a public health crisis.

  • For more than 20 years, Carlile has provided hoodies to every student at its partner school, Mountain View Elementary during winter to give kids who are often in need of clothing to keep them warm. Recently, the hoodies have included high-visibility colors to help protect children during the dark winter months.

  • One thing that sets Carlile apart from the other 2020 Gold Pan Finalists is that Carlile’s community service is driven by its employees. From moving beds and supplies for Beans Cafe and Brother Francis Shelter in Anchorage to supplying food programs for military members caught up in the federal government shutdowns, Carlile employees give of their time, talents, and business capabilities to support community needs.

Employee volunteer teams can also be found at events supporting the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Covent House, and dozens of other non-profits. When it comes to community service, Carlile’s efforts often go unnoticed because they simply jump in and help without a whole lot of fanfare or publicity.

Carlile, along with its other Saltchuk sister companies in Alaska, collectively gave $2.5 million to Alaskan organizations including in-kind and cash donations in 2018.

Carlile’s leadership is personally vested in community service, so the spirit of giving is lead by example. Carlile’s infamous Alaskan ingenuity has been applied time and time again to community requests for help. We are honored to be a 2020 Gold Pan Finalist.
